Recording a Loom without leaking your inbox

Which Loom recording mode keeps the inbox out?

A window recording limits the visual source to the selected window. If the whole walkthrough fits in one browser or slide window, start there and remove private content from that window.

Loom’s updated Mac app labels the option Record window; older versions may call it Window. The current interface also has a display recording mode. Selecting the entire display records a different source and bypasses ScreenVeil’s filtered window.

For a walkthrough that crosses apps, start ScreenVeil and select Privacy Screen as the Loom window source. Use Show Privacy Screen if it is not visible in the picker. Camera and microphone choices remain separate recording settings.

Loom’s documentation distinguishes its newer and older desktop interfaces, so follow the controls available in your installed version rather than looking for one exact button layout.

Is the inbox in another app or inside the browser?

Exclude the app or whole window containing the inbox. Marking Mail private does not hide Gmail or another webmail service inside the browser you are sharing.

Move private browser work to a separate window or browser before recording. ScreenVeil cannot hide one tab or redact a sentence inside an allowed window. Specific window exclusions reset when Privacy Screen stops, so check them again at the start of the next take.

Also inspect the browser’s recent searches, account menu and autocomplete suggestions. A product page can look clean until you open a menu populated with real account information. Use a fictional demo account when demonstrating these controls.

Rehearse a short take with fictional messages

The following is a proposed recording exercise, not a reported test result. Put PUBLIC SAMPLE in the slide or app you plan to show. In a separate notes or mail window, use PRIVATE SAMPLE and fictional names instead of real messages.

Keep the rehearsal short enough to watch in full, but include the awkward transitions: switching apps, opening a menu, consulting notes and returning to the demo.

   Prepare the source

   Start Privacy Screen and exclude the private sample app or window. In Loom, select Privacy Screen as the window to record.

   Run the transition

   Record the public sample, bring the private window forward locally, then continue the walkthrough.

   Exercise the pause

   Use Cover feed while Privacy Screen is the source, then restore the public view. Know how to stop Loom’s recording separately.

   Watch the saved take

   Inspect the actual video for the private sample and listen to its audio. A local preview does not establish what Loom saved.

Does hiding the inbox mute its sound?

No. ScreenVeil’s visual exclusions do not mute system audio or microphone input. A hidden chat can still make a sound, and spoken customer details can still be recorded.

Check Loom’s microphone and system-audio controls before the take. If the walkthrough needs product audio, use a fictional sample and listen to the rehearsal to confirm that the intended sound is present without unrelated notifications.

For narration, keep your script free of real customer names and credentials too. Hiding the notes app does not remove information you read aloud.

What should you review before sending the link?

Review the finished recording, including its beginning and end, before distributing it. A private item may appear during setup or after the walkthrough seems finished.

Check the title, thumbnail and any generated transcript available in your Loom workspace. Those surfaces can reveal information independently of the frame currently on screen. If the take contains private material, correct or replace the recording and verify the result before sharing.

Use Loom’s Share and link settings to review who can access the video. Available controls depend on the workspace and plan; do not assume that having an unlisted link gives it the permissions you intend.

ScreenVeil cannot remove frames from a video Loom already saved, and replacing a recording does not recall copies a viewer may already have received.

What if Privacy Screen is missing or stops updating?

Stop the take and resolve the source before continuing. Check ScreenVeil’s permission and sharing instructions, show the Privacy Screen window, and reselect it in Loom.

If the walkthrough can fit in one ordinary app window, that can be a simpler fallback after you inspect its contents. Switching to a full-display recording requires a fresh privacy review; it does not preserve the exclusions in Privacy Screen.
