Privacy Screen not showing in Zoom? Try this first
Recover a missing Privacy Screen window in Zoom or Google Meet. Check visibility, the window picker and macOS recording permissions in the right order.
By ScreenVeilPublished
Where did my window go?The short answer
Start Privacy Screen, then choose Show Privacy Screen from ScreenVeil’s menu and reopen the meeting app’s window picker. Keep the window visible until selected. If all windows are missing, check the meeting app or browser’s screen-recording permission.
Do not pick the whole desktop just to get unstuck
You open the share picker and Privacy Screen is not there. Choosing Desktop may get something on the call quickly, but it also bypasses the filtered feed. Pause for a moment and recover the intended window instead.
A missing source can mean the feed has not started, its preview has already hidden, you are browsing the wrong type of source, or the meeting tool lacks permission. Check those in order so you do not reset permissions for a simple visibility issue.
Recover the source in three moves
Start → Show → Select
- 01
Start
Turn on Privacy Screen in ScreenVeil
- 02
Show
Choose Show Privacy Screen in the menu
- 03
Select
Reopen the meeting’s window picker
Match the symptom to the next action
| What you see | Next action |
|---|---|
| No Privacy Screen window anywhere | Start the feed in ScreenVeil. Resolve any setup prompt. |
| It disappeared after a previous share | Use Show Privacy Screen from the menu, then reopen the picker. |
| Only browser tabs are listed | Switch to the window-sharing category. |
| Many windows are missing or sharing fails | Check macOS permission for the meeting app or browser. |
| A window is listed but its video is frozen | Check the received view and the meeting tool’s capture settings. |
Check permissions only if you need to
- 1
Open the macOS privacy settings
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording. The label may be Screen Recording on older versions of macOS.
- 2
Check the right application
ScreenVeil needs access to create the feed. Zoom, or the browser running Meet, needs its own access to capture the selected source. Permission for one does not grant permission to the other.
- 3
Follow the requested restart
If macOS asks you to quit and reopen an app, do so after leaving or pausing your call appropriately. Reopen the feed and picker afterward. Do not erase app state or reset every system permission as a first step.
Why does it hide after I start sharing?
ScreenVeil shows the output so your meeting tool can select it, then gets the preview out of your workspace when sharing is detected. That is different from stopping the feed. You can also dismiss the preview with Escape.
Before choosing it for a new share, make it visible again from the menu. If the meeting app has already opened a picker, cancel and reopen that picker after showing the window so you are not looking at a stale list.
If the source appears but the result is wrong
Stop the meeting share and check with fictional content. On Zoom, review Share selected app window only in its advanced sharing settings where available. Our earlier Zoom check froze when the output was moved fully offscreen, so do not drag it off the display as a hiding workaround.
Change a public document while viewing the received share. Seeing a plausible still image is not enough: the receiver should keep updating. If you cannot confirm the output, keep the meeting share stopped while troubleshooting.
